Ayushman Bharat aims to transform healthcare delivery from a fragmented system to a holistic and need-based system. The scheme adopts a comprehensive approach to disease prevention, awareness, and treatment, taking into account health care services at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. It consists of two major components. Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) was launched by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on 23 September 2018 in Ranchi, Jharkhand.

PM-JAY is considered to be the world’s largest health protection scheme, which aims to provide annual health coverage of ₹5,00,000 per family to about 10.74 crore poor and vulnerable families (about 50 crore people). The scheme is selected on the basis of the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) of 2011 and is fully funded by the Central and State Governments.
